GOOGLE SEARCH UNDER ATTACK. WHAT IT MEANS TO YOU.
It’s happening. New AI tools, such as ChatGPT, are being used for more searches, and Google is fighting back. Will this affect your website’s traffic and clicks? Here’s the latest:
- MORE THAN JUST THE 10 BLUE LINES: You won’t see them first for most searches anymore. Google is diving deeper.
- “AI OVERVIEWS”: Google’s new name for its search results to compete with the AI sites like ChatGPT, Perplexity and Claude.
- COMPLETE ANSWER WITHOUT CLICKING ON WEBSITES: The AI tool gathers the information and provides the results in a paragraph or two.
- WEBSITE STILL IMPORTANT: The information the AI tool you choose still needs to search the web for its answers, so your website must be found if it uses your information in its results.
- HOW DOES IT FIND YOUR WEBSITE: It searches by relevance and authority. Your content must provide this for your business to be found.
- SITES ON PAGE ONE NO LONGER TOTALLY RULE: Research consistently shows that Google AI Overviews may utilize information from two sites on Page One of Google Search results and one from even Page Three. It depends.
- GOOGLE SEARCH TRAFFIC IS DOWN ON APPLE PHONES: According to Apple’s testimony at a recent DOJ trial in April, Google searches over the Safari browser fell over the last two months. “That has not happened in over 20 years,” Eddie Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of services, testified.
- CONTENT IS STILL KING: Now more than ever, your website must be relevant to the searcher’s intent. Start by using the Google mantra of EEAT, as Google still accounts for 90% of all searches, even though that’s down from 93% in late 2022, when ChatGPT was announced.
