Ottaway Communications was founded in 1982 by Bob Ottaway in Lansing, MI. The purchase of WMMQ FM radio was the first undertaking of the corporation. This station, licensed to Charlotte, MI, eventually became a powerful force in the Lansing – East Lansing market with its introduction of the Classic Rock music format in the spring of 1985. It quickly went from nowhere in the ratings to number one in all male categories. The format has been duplicated by over 300 radio stations throughout the United States and Canada.
After selling the station in 1992, Bob consulted radio station owners throughout the Great Lakes area culminating in his founding of CBS Promotions to market the eight CBS owned radio stations in Metro Detroit in 1998.
After the introduction of this new service for CBS, he went into the media buying business in 1999. That was the start of Ottaway Communications in Detroit.
With the invention of geotargeting by Google, digital marketing really came into mass acceptance. Now, instead of putting an ad on a platform like Overture and sending your message online throughout the world, you could geotarget it by zip code.
This led to the birth of Ottaway Digital in 2006 and an explosion of business for clients throughout the Detroit market. Ottaway Digital soon was serving over 40 clients with digital marketing from AdWords to Facebook to Twitter.
It was a gold rush in those early days, and they were the only Detroit agency doing it. Unfortunately, it all came to a screeching halt in the fall of 2008 when General Motors announced its bankruptcy. Big schedules from businesses like ABC Warehouse went from tens of thousands of dollars a month to zero.
After the Great Recession ended and business began to pick up, Ottaway Digital stayed in the digital space with a strong emphasis on Search Engine Optimization and sales lead generation.
