What Is an SEO Consultant and Do You Need One?

If you’ve spent any time trying to get your business found on Google, Claude or ChatGPT, you’ve probably come across the term “SEO consultant.” Maybe a friend recommended one, or you saw an ad promising to get you to the top of the search results. But what is an SEO consultant, and is hiring one the right move for your business? Let’s break it down.

What is an SEO Consultant?

An SEO consultant studies how search engines like Google, Claude or ChatGPT decide which websites show for a given search and then advises a business on how to improve its own visibility. That usually involves a mix of technical work, content strategy, and ongoing analysis.

In practice, this can look like:

  • Auditing your website for technical issues that keep it from ranking, like slow load times or broken links
  • Researching the specific words and phrases your customers are typing into Google, Claude or ChatGPT
  • Reviewing your existing content and recommending changes
  • Advising on how other websites link back to yours (a factor Google weighs heavily)
  • Tracking your rankings and traffic over time and adjusting the strategy as needed
  • Analyzing the impact of AI on your ability to show up in searches

The best consultants don’t just hand you a checklist. They help you understand why certain pages aren’t performing and what to prioritize first, especially if your budget or time is limited.

SEO Agency vs. Consultant: What’s the Difference?

This is where a lot of business owners get confused, and it’s a fair question.

An SEO consultant is typically an individual (or a very small team) who works directly with you on strategy. Think of them as an advisor.

An SEO agency, on the other hand, usually has a full team, meaning writers, technical specialists, and account managers who work together to provide you with SEO consultation and many other customized solutions, and they can both plan and execute the work.

Neither one is automatically “better.” Instead, they can complement one another and give you deeper insights. A consultant can be a great fit if you already have an in-house team that just needs strategic direction, or if you want a second opinion on a plan someone else built.

A full-service SEO agency essentially does both, and this option makes the most sense if you want someone to handle the entire process, from strategy through execution, without you having to coordinate multiple moving parts yourself.

How Important is SEO in these days of AI?

SEO is still very important. We like to think of it as the foundation for AI.

AI hasn’t taken over the need for search engine optimization. Instead, a qualified SEO expert knows how to integrate both to create results for your business.

Here are a few honest signs that you could benefit from consultation with an SEO company:

  • You’ve noticed competitors consistently outranking you for searches that matter to your business.
  • Your website traffic has been flat or declining for months.
  • You don’t have the time or in-house expertise to keep up with search engine changes.
  • You’re launching in a new market or city and need a strategy from scratch.
  • You are concerned about the impact of AI
  • You are wondering how to leverage AI to grow your brand and its leads and conversions.

Keep in mind that SEO isn’t a quick fix. It’s marketing at its most basic level. It typically takes months of consistent work before you see meaningful movement in rankings, so it’s worth going in with realistic expectations. However, once you do start moving the needle with SEO, the results make a lasting impact and get better and better.

How Much Does All This Cost?

Pricing for an SEO agency and/or SEO consultant varies quite a bit depending on the scope of work and the experience level.

A 2026 Ahrefs survey of 439 SEO providers found that independent consultants average around $3,250 per month on retainer, while the broader market, including agencies and freelancers, averages closer to $2,917 per month. Hourly rates vary by provider type: consultants average $171 an hour and freelancers $72, while agencies average around $99 — though that figure reflects a blended team rate across junior and senior staff. Experience matters too — hourly rates climb from about $73 for SEOs in business two years or less to $118 for those with a decade or more of experience.

If you’re comparing quotes, be cautious of anything that sounds too good to be true. A retainer that’s dramatically below market rate usually means less actual work is happening behind the scenes.

Making the Right Call for Your Business

There’s no single right answer for every business. Some companies do best with a consultant guiding an internal team. Others need a full agency partner who can handle strategy, content, and technical work all in one place. The right fit really comes down to your goals, your current resources, and how much of the work you want to own versus hand off.
